TIRANA, Jan 9 /ATA/ Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku stated that flooding in several cities is attributed to government mismanagement rather than weather conditions.
Tabaku points out that Albania experiences the same scenario every year, wildfires in summer and floods in winter, caused not by natural factors but by insufficient state action and under-investment in prevention.
According to her, civil emergencies, defense infrastructure, irrigation and drainage systems, as well as preventive measures, have been neglected for years.
“These are not phenomena that should be managed on a case-by-case basis, but prevented through serious policies and sustainable investments,” Tabaku emphasizes.
The deputy also criticized the government’s budget priorities, pointing out that less than 1% of GDP is allocated to irrigation and drainage, while funds for concession contracts—which she labels as corrupt—are many times higher. She argues that this is not accidental but a political decision that downplays the genuine needs of the citizens.
Tabaku also highlights the Civil Emergencies Law, enacted three years ago, noting that the bylaws required to make it applicable are still missing.
“Despite the numerous decisions by the Council of Ministers, the implementation of this crucial law for citizens’ safety has not been prioritized,” she stresses.
In conclusion, the Democratic Party MP urges the establishment of an effective preventive system, the compilation of a national flood strategy, and the provision of an adequate budget to safeguard citizens’ lives, property, and businesses.
“Currently, families and their homes are left vulnerable because of this mismanagement,” Tabaku concludes.
