TIRANA, Jan 9 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama on Friday pledged full assistance to citizens affected by the floods, stressing that the government will fulfil all its responsibilities concerning the compensation of citizens for their damage to the residential properties and livestock.
Rama noted that upon taking office, the current government inherited substantial flood-related debts, especially in the Shkodër area, which he says have since been settled individually. He also highlighted that upgrades to flood defences have lessened flood damage, despite worsening climate-related challenges.
“When the government took office, it inherited a mountain of debts from floods in the Shkodër region. All of these have been settled one by one, and the govt. has no outstanding debts with the citizens regarding past floods. We have tackled these challenges head- on with human, state, and political responsibility, and thanks to significantly strengthened defense infrastructure, the impact of floods has been greatly reduced despite intensifying climate risks. At the same time, it has coped with growing challenges from fires, the pandemic, and the earthquake, emerging stronger and better prepared for future crises.”
“The government is committed to fully compensate those affected, acting with full human, state, and political responsibility,” he said.
At a meeting of the Interministerial Civil Emergencies Committee to tackle the recent flood situation caused by heavy rains, Prime Minister Rama stressed that flood protection efforts and resilience measures will continue to be coordinated around the clock.
“I want to point out that the intensive, around-the-clock mobilisation of all state bodies and local authorities will continue to be coordinated until this severe weather situation is resolved,” said Prime Minister Rama.
In conclusion, Rama urged government majority MPs to stay engaged and continue supporting citizens even after the challenging situation has gone past.
“On the other hand, I want to tell all the MPs from the ruling majority present in this meeting via Zoom to remain engaged both today and tomorrow, even after the difficult moment has passed, staying close to the people, with the people, and for the people,” said Rama.
