Tirana protest lasts more than 10 hours, with clashes, vandalism and fires in city streets

TIRANA, Oct. 16 /ATA/ – A protest in Tirana that began around 11 a.m. continued into the evening on Friday, with demonstrators throwing stones at police, damaging public infrastructure and setting fire to benches and rubbish bins across the capital.

As protesters dispersed into different parts of the city, some moved towards parliament while others remained near the prime minister’s office, where police were deployed.

Tensions escalated near parliament, where police used water cannons to disperse demonstrators after they continued throwing stones at officers.

Protesters also set fire to rubbish bins and benches in several areas, including Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard, Skanderbeg Square and Kavaja Street, while damaging public spaces and road signs.

The demonstration, which involved masked participants and minors, had earlier seen clashes between protesters and police near the Ministry of Education and outside the prime minister’s office.

Protesters later returned to the area outside the prime minister’s office after reportedly reaching an agreement with police to avoid violence and continue the demonstration peacefully. Police established a security cordon in front of the building.

One protester climbed the steps of the prime minister’s office while holding a young girl in his arms.
