Albanian Language Added to NYC public school communications

TIRANA, June 21 /ATA/ – The Albanian language has been officially added to the list of languages used for communications in New York City public schools.

NYC Schools Chancellor Melissa Avilés-Ramos announced earlier this week that Albanian is now one of the 13 official languages used by the Department of Education for school communications, alongside English.

This marks a major milestone for the Albanian-American community, improving parental engagement by providing school documents and announcements in their native language.

Previously, only 10 languages were included. With this update, three new languages have been added, including Albanian.

This means that all official documents, notices, and important information sent by schools to parents will now also be available in Albanian.

The move follows years of advocacy and coincides with the recent launch of the city’s first Albanian-English dual language program. These initiatives aim to preserve cultural heritage while supporting academic achievement.

The development was made possible through the efforts of the Coordinating Council of the Diaspora, including Mark Gjonaj, Drita Gjongecaj, and Emina Cunmulaj, in cooperation with NYC’s Department of Education.
