PRISHTINA, June 21 /ATA/ – The Assembly of Kosovo failed again on Saturday to elect a Speaker, registering the 35th failed attempt since the February parliamentary elections in the country.
Only 51 lawmakers voted in favour of the proposed candidate, far short from the required majority of votes. The parliament session was suspended and a new one was rescheduled for June 23.
The session chair Avni Dehari opened proceedings by requesting nominations for the secret ballot commission, which were not submitted by key opposition parties—PDK, LDK, AAK, and Nisma. These parties also refused to vote for the commission itself, arguing procedural violations.
“Fifty-one MPs voted in favor, one against. No quorum was achieved. The session is adjourned to June 25 at 11:00,” Dehari announced.
The ruling Vetevendosja continues to back Albulena Haxhiu as its candidate for Parliament Speaker, but opposition parties reject both the candidacy and the secret ballot procedure, citing procedural violations.
Kosovo held elections on February 9, but since the first attempt to convene on April 15, no speaker has been elected, blocking parliament from moving forward.
