TIRANA, March 14 /ATA/ – The main space within the Elbasan castle, a 15th-century fortress in the central Albanian city, will soon be transformed into a tourist area with many guesthouses, Prime Minister Edi Rama said as he visited a family in the “Kala” neighbourhood in Elbasan on Sunday.
“A project will kick off to transform the beautiful Elbasan castle with its interior space designed to be transformed into a tourist area, featuring guesthouses, services, a museum, historic addresses as cultural heritage sites,” PM Rama said.
The government head noted that a very detailed project on the buildings’ restorations is needed.
“We will implement the castle’s whole transformation project now. We will do what we have actually already done in Korça, Vlora. We will transform this castle to fully exploit its potential,” Rama added.
The chairman of the Socialist Party parliamentary group Taulant Balla noted that “Elbasan castle is the largest fortress in the Balkans. But what distinguishes our castle is that it is a symbol of the interreligious coexistence. I don’t think there is any castle anywhere around the world, where the mosque, the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and synagogue are all located in a distance of just 400 metres from each other,” Balla said.
Elbasan Mayor Gledian Llataj said that the design is almost ready to revitalize the main streets and buildings within the Castle.
