Malaj: Parliament approves laws to strengthen payment security and combat money laundering

TIRANA, Oct 22/ATA/ Despite tensions and the opposition’s blockade of the parliamentary rostrum, Parliament passed two key laws related to the economy, financial security and Albania’s EU integration.

In a social media post, Finance Minister Petrit Malaj described their adoption as another concrete step towards strengthening financial security and transparency and bringing Albania’s financial system closer to EU standards.

“We approved amendments to the Law on Payment Services, which will make electronic payments more secure, increase fee transparency, strengthen consumer protection and align the framework with European Union standards,” Malaj said.

The finance minister added that Parliament had also approved the Law on the Prevention of Money Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism, which strengthens scrutiny of suspicious transactions, increases transparency regarding business ownership, introduces rules for crypto-assets and caps cash payments in commercial transactions at €10,000.

Malaj said that “political debate is part of democracy, but efforts to reform and modernise the economy must continue uninterrupted.”
