Rama: Citizen protest will improve governance

TIRANA, August 24 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated today that the citizen-led protests against Zvërnec tourism project have posed a genuine challenge to his administration, viewing them as a valuable catalyst for better governance and stronger civic ties.

PM Rama expressed his belief that governance will improve thanks to past experience and public protests. He noted that the demonstrations outside his office genuinely challenged the government by pushing for more.

Further on, PM Rama said that the recent events have deeply eroded public trust in governance. “Yet, I am convinced that both Albanian citizens and the government will emerge stronger. Governance must improve—not just because of accumulated experience and resources, but because it has no other choice. Ironically, the absence of a strong opposition has been a gift, forcing us to challenge ourselves in ways we never had to before,” said the prime minister.

“The protest really challenged us. I am not talking about the one that is going on. The one that is going on is a conglomerate that certainly has every right to continue as long as it has strength and fuel paid for it to exist. I am talking about that protest as long as it was civil and as long as the people appeared there urged by the need to unite their voices and say: “Today, we deserve more.” And this is good”, said Rama.

The prime minister also stressed that the government should not be satisfied with the achievements so far or with comparisons with the past.

“However, you all should remember one thing: Albania has never been better; it has never been more internationally valued; it has never been more supported by real opportunities to do more,“ said the prime minister. /m.q/j.p/p.s./
