PM Rama: Plan to increase transparency on staple food prices, “social Albania” a priority

TIRANA, Aug. 24 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Monday that Albanian government is working on a range of objectives across several sectors, with healthcare, education and improving citizens’ quality of life being top priorities.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting in south-eastern town of Pogradec, Rama said the government aimed to build a broader framework for a “social Albania,” arguing that the resources and opportunities to achieve that goal were greater than in the past.

“We have focused heavily on healthcare and education, as well as on creating a chain that will be the chain of a social Albania,” Rama said. “Today, a social Albania is not only important, as it has always been, but is becoming more possible because opportunities have increased. It is about the things that directly affect citizens’ quality of life. Today, it is about more than survival; it is about quality of life.”

PM Rama also addressed the issue of staple food prices, saying the government did not intend to set prices but would introduce a mechanism to give consumers greater transparency.

“We have a plan to provide citizens with transparency on the prices of basic food products,” the government head said. He added that the plan would be presented once its details had been fully worked out.

The initiative is part of a broader package of measures the government plans to introduce during the second year of its term, he said.
