Five candidates enter race for Prosecutor General

TIRANA, Aug 4 /ATA/ The High Prosecutorial Council said on Tuesday that the application deadline for the post of Prosecutor General had expired, with five candidates contending for the position: Adnan Xholi, Arta Marku, Fatjona Memçaj, Rovena Zoto and Ylli Pjeternikaj.

The candidates will present their platforms to the Council, which will evaluate their applications and rank the top three contenders based on the points awarded.

The list of three candidates will be sent to Parliament, which must elect the Prosecutor General with a three-fifths majority vote of all MPs.

If Parliament does not appoint the Prosecutor General within 30 days of receiving the candidates’ list, the candidate ranked first by the High Prosecutorial Council will be automatically appointed.

The procedure, established under the justice reform, is intended to safeguard the independence of the Prosecution Service and reduce political interference in the selection of the Prosecutor General.

The race for Prosecutor General comes after the end of Olsian Çela’s seven-year term. He was elected to the post in December 2019 and will complete his mandate in December this year.

The Prosecutor General serves a seven-year term, with no right to seek reappointment.
