PM Rama says new Durrës university campus will complement, not replace, Tirana project

TIRANA, June 23 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Tuesday that plans for a new university campus in the coastal city of Durrës would not come at the expense of a separate campus development project in Tirana, as the government pursues broader reforms in higher education infrastructure.

Speaking at the presentation of five finalist proposals in an international design competition for the new campus of Aleksandër Moisiu University, Rama said the Durrës project was intended to create a modern academic hub integrating education, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and student life.

“The Durrës campus is not a development that excludes the development of a university campus in Tirana,” Rama said.

He noted that the government was also working to align future infrastructure needs between the College of Europe, which is being established in Tirana, and the University of Tirana. According to Rama, the College of Europe project is expected to create additional space that could also benefit the country’s largest public university.

The planned Durrës campus is designed to bring together teaching facilities, research laboratories, innovation centres, cultural venues and student services within a single academic ecosystem aimed at strengthening the university’s role in regional economic and social development.

Five finalist teams presented their architectural concepts during Monday’s event, outlining competing visions for what is expected to become one of Albania’s most significant university and urban development projects.

The government has promoted international design competitions as part of its wider strategy to modernise public infrastructure and attract leading architectural expertise to major development projects.
