TIRANA, May 29 /ATA – By Maela Marini/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Friday that the Socialist Party would “complete opening the tunnel” toward European Union membership, comparing Albania’s EU path to infrastructure projects completed under his government.
Speaking at an event in the northeastern district of Dibra, Rama said Albania’s EU accession process was as challenging as the construction of the Arbër Road, which he said his party had already delivered.
“Just as we made the Arbër Road a reality, we will also make EU membership a reality,” Rama said. “As difficult as the Murriz tunnel once seemed, we will complete this journey to the end, and that tunnel will be fully opened for Albania and for Albanians.”
Rama said the Socialist Party had always been driven by a “constructive” political approach, contrasting it with what he described as forces of division and confrontation in Albanian politics.
He said his party had consistently promoted tolerance and civic values, while opponents had historically contributed to political and social polarisation.
Rama also reiterated that the Socialist Party had taken responsibility for advancing institutional reforms, including strengthening judicial independence and completing the separation of powers in practice.
He said the government-backed justice reform and vetting process demonstrated that Albania was building a functioning rule-of-law system, even at political cost.
“Democracy cannot function without the separation of powers,” he said. “We are making democracy work despite all difficulties and costs.”
Rama added that the reform process showed that judicial independence was real and irreversible, and said the country’s trajectory toward the EU remained firmly on track under Socialist leadership.
