Migration agreement with Italy stays in effect as long as Rome desires, says PM Rama

TIRANA, May 12/ATA/ PM Edi Rama reacted today to reports about FM Ferit Hoxha’s remarks on renewing the Italy-Albania migration pact beyond its initial five-year term.

Rama stated the Italy-Albania pact will last as long as Rome wants, reiterating that Tirana’s stance on the protocol is firm.

“The Protocol lasts as long as Italy wants it to; there is no fixed termination date from our side,” Rama wrote.

The head of government reacted after an interview by FM Hoxha for “Euractiv”, where he was asked whether the protocol between Albania and Italy would be renewed after the end of the initial five-year period.

Hoxha’s response had been “I am not sure”, assuming that by then Albania might have become a member of the European Union and the situation would be different.

The minister clarified that his statement did not represent a decision or change of policy, but only a reflection of the moment. /m.q/j.p/p.s./
