BoA Governor: Internal audit key pillar of financial stability and transparency

TIRANA, May 11 /ATA/ – The governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, said on Monday that internal auditing remained a fundamental pillar of financial stability, integrity and transparency.

Speaking at the International Auditors Conference in Tirana, Sejko said Albania’s hosting for the first time of high-level global and European representatives from the internal auditing profession reflected the country’s progress in strengthening institutions, good governance and transparency standards.

Sejko praised the efforts of the Institute of Internal Auditors Albania, the Albanian Association of Banks and the Internal Audit Committee in advancing the profession and raising auditing standards in Albania.

He said internal auditing had assumed an increasingly strategic role as the financial sector faced challenges linked to digitalisation, technological innovation and cyber risks.

“It is not only a control instrument, but also an essential function for risk prevention, improving processes and supporting sound decision-making,” Sejko said.

The governor said the Bank of Albania has continued strengthening its internal audit function as a third line of control through external quality assessments, enhanced reporting and participation in strategic projects related to operational risk management and business continuity.

Referring to the 2025 Global Internal Audit Standards, Sejko said alignment with European and international standards represented an important step toward modernising the profession and improving institutional quality.

He added that cooperation between public institutions, the banking sector and international partners would contribute to strengthening governance and financial stability in Albania.
