Kos says Albania among front-runners in EU accession process

TIRANA, April 24 /ATA/ The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated on Friday that Albania is one of the front-runners in the EU accession process.

In an interview with the “Klan News,” Kos spoke about Albania’s progress in the European integration process.

“We hope that by May, we will be able to approve all the interim benchmarks for the rule of law and then begin closing the chapters. It is remarkable what Albania has achieved in recent years with the opening of all the clusters,” said Kos.

Kos confirmed that Albania is on the right path to joining the EU, while praising the determination of the country’s leadership in this direction.

“I am very happy that your government is so committed to making the EU membership a reality. What we see in Albania is the determination of your leadership in this direction. This is truly one of the most important points. You have one of the highest levels of public support for EU membership in polls, with 90% or more. No other candidate country has such support. The fact that you have determined leadership for fully fledged EU membership makes this project a perfect combination. The support of the citizens and the work of the government will contribute in Brussels for sure,” said Kos.

When asked if Albania’s EU membership is possible by 2030, Kos said, “If Albania continues on this path, everything is possible.”

“We in the European Commission do not set dates, but we support the realistic visions of candidate countries,” she emphasized.

Kos further affirmed that, as long as she holds the position of Commissioner for Enlargement, she will remain committed to ensuring that candidate countries achieve full EU membership.

“As the Commissioner for Enlargement, my role is to assist candidate countries in their journey to becoming full members of the European Union. I cannot, therefore, accept anything less than this objective. Should some candidate countries choose not to pursue full membership or wish to engage with the EU at a different level, that is up to them. However, for as long as I serve as Commissioner for Enlargement, I will advocate for those countries I consider my candidates to attain full EU membership. I have ten candidate countries under my responsibility,” concluded Kos.
