TIRANA, April 24 /ATA/ The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated on Friday that the Port of Durrës is destined to be dismantled in order to make way for the construction of a ‘Dubai of One Thousand and One Nights.’”
At a meeting organized by the Democratic Party in collaboration with the ‘Brain Gain’ Department, Chairman Sali Berisha criticised Prime Minister Edi Rama’s proposal for the Port of Durrës. He asserted that the port would be dismantled to pave the way for a vast development project, described as a ‘Dubai of One Thousand and One Nights.’ According to Berisha, the plan entails thousands of apartments, several luxury hotels, high‑standard swimming pools, and a marina for 200 yachts, while a new port at Porto Romano would be constructed by private investors.
Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, asserted that Albanian citizens are being stripped of their most valuable public asset. He stressed that the Port of Durrës—comprising its land, infrastructure, investments and docks—constitutes the nation’s foremost public property, surpassing even the Drin cascade. Berisha cautioned that this vital national resource is now being dismantled.”
Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, contended that the port set for construction—intended to serve as a deep‑water facility for the wider region—would in reality possess only one quarter of the capacity of the existing Port of Durrës. He cautioned that, in practical terms, Albania would be left without a genuine port, losing its principal harbour and replacing it with a diminished facility of limited scale.
Berisha argued that Albanian citizens are being burdened with the cost of €1.2 billion in public funds to construct a new port of only one quarter the capacity of Durrës. He claimed that, in addition to losing an asset valued at around €4 billion, taxpayers must now finance what he described as an inadequate facility, despite earlier plans to deepen the existing port to accommodate 50,000‑tonne vessels.
