PM Rama: New pension scheme to complement existing system

TIRANA, April 8 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Wednesday that the Albanian government is working on a new pension scheme designed to supplement, rather than replace, the current system.

Speaking during a visit to an industrial complex in the port city of Durres, Rama said the initiative would allow workers to contribute a portion of their salary to a separate fund, which the state would match on a one-to-one basis.

“For example, if someone contributes one euro a month to their personal pension fund, which will be added to their basic pension, the state will contribute one euro as well, doubling the amount. This mechanism will be combined: the state for public sector employees and the private sector for its own workers,” Rama said.

He said the scheme would help build a stronger pension fund while reinforcing ties between the private sector and employees.

Rama also highlighted the growing demand for highly skilled workers amid technological changes.

“At a time when technology is transforming the workplace and, in some areas, replacing human labor, the need for highly specialized human capital is increasing. Robots cannot meet all enterprise needs. Companies today seek qualified specialists in the numbers they need. For example, this company currently has 15 specialists but needs around 40,” he said.
