Berisha says Albania failed again in IBAR process, calls for public mobilisation

TIRANA, April 8 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha said on Wednesday that Albania has once again failed in the process of adopting the European Union’s position regarding the Interim Benchmark Assessment Report (IBAR), a crucial next step in the country’s EU accession process.

Speaking at a meeting of the DP parliamentary group, Berisha said the assessment process remains blocked at the level of the Council of Ambassadors, which reviews implementation of key governance benchmarks.

“Every week, the country fails to pass. Each week, more countries add to those opposing,” Berisha said, referring to the evaluation of reforms related to the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

He criticised government claims regarding Albania’s regional standing, arguing that Montenegro had already received unanimous positive evaluation earlier in March.

Berisha also called on citizens to take part in a national protest scheduled for April 17, describing it as a moment to defend what he called “the European dream.”

“The 17th is a day for all Albanians, regardless of political beliefs, for whom the European dream is the project of their lives, their families and their country,” he said.
