Opposition lawmaker: Corruption hurting Albanian economy, public trust

TIRANA, March 10 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) lawmaker Jorida Tabaku said on Tuesday that corruption is damaging Albania’s economy and eroding public trust, following the release of a report by the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution Structure (SPAK).

In a video posted on social media, Tabaku said corruption had spread across the economy, public administration and key markets, undermining citizens’ confidence and the country’s European integration prospects.

“Corruption is killing the Albanian economy, destroying citizens’ trust in institutions and undermining their future,” Tabaku said. “It is one of the main reasons why Albanians are leaving the country and a major obstacle to the European integration process.”

She argued that the current economic and institutional system fuels corruption and distorts market competition.

Tabaku also raised concerns about public procurement, saying tenders were often predetermined, awarded without genuine competition and at inflated costs.

“This is a system that not only facilitates money laundering but also hands out contracts without competition, with multiplied values and in a predetermined manner,” she said.

According to Tabaku, such practices have distorted the market economy by undermining fair competition and disadvantaging businesses that are not part of public procurement schemes.

“Today the Albanian economy is dominated by businesses that survive by winning public tenders. But where is the market economy? Where is competition?” she said.

She added that corruption had effectively “strangled” the country’s economy and future, calling for deep changes to what she described as a corrupt system.
