PM Rama: Religious coexistence must be nurtured

TIRANA, March 5 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Thursday religious coexistence must be continuously cultivated, speaking at the promotion of the book “Në Sofrën e Hënës” (“At the Table of the Moon”), a collection of his reflections shared during traditional iftar dinners held over the years.

Rama said the experience of hosting iftars had encouraged him to deepen his understanding of Islam and its history in Albania, while challenging stereotypes that portray the religion as incompatible with European culture. He added that in a rapidly developing world, the human need for belief is also growing.

The prime minister noted that religion, particularly Islam, contains significant cultural wisdom related to people’s awareness of their limits and dignity. He highlighted practices such as fasting and other rituals, saying they also carry educational and health benefits.

“In the entire process and practice of Islam, including fasting, there is a wisdom that teaches and educates,” Rama said, adding that he had learned about the health-related aspects of various religious rituals from a Muslim physician.

Rama stressed that Albania’s tradition of religious harmony must not be taken for granted and requires continuous effort to preserve.

He also described the iftar tradition as more than a religious ritual, calling it a social practice that brings people together around the table and strengthens community ties.

“Iftar, beyond its religious meaning, is a form of social education and a unique opportunity for people to share a moment together,” Rama said, adding that the tradition is open to everyone, including atheists.
