PM Rama shares symbolic image marking Kosovo independence anniversary

TIRANA, Feb 18 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama on Wednesday shared a symbolic image on social media to mark the 18th anniversary of Kosovo’s independence, a day after official celebrations were held.

The photograph shows three young people holding the flags of Albania, Kosovo and the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), standing before a cityscape in Kosovo.

The image conveys a message of national unity and shared identity, underscoring the historical, cultural and spiritual ties between Albania and Kosovo.

In a separate gesture on Tuesday, Rama held a phone call with former Kosovo president Hashim Thaçi to mark the anniversary.

Kosovo declared independence on Feb. 17, 2008. The move followed years of conflict and ethnic cleansing during the 1998-1999 war, when Albanians were targeted by forces loyal to former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milošević.

After the war ended in June 1999 and international troops were deployed, a process to determine Kosovo’s final status formally began in November 2005, culminating in the February 17, 2008 independence declaration.
