Berisha: Opposition has failed to incite widespread public outrage over corruption

TIRANA, Jan 21 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha stated Wednesday that while corruption existed during his centre-right government, there was also a determined fight against it.

Speaking to supporters and DP activists in Tirana, Berisha said “DP is a political force that makes painful decisions, but we take them in the name of morality and principle.”

“However, a serious problem remains. We have not managed to trigger widespread public anger over corruption. People dislike it, but the reaction is not what it should be. This is our shortcoming, and we must acknowledge it. We cannot tire of explaining it,” he said.

Berisha recalled that during eight years in power, the DP administered 30 billion euros, while the subsequent government managed 67 billion euros over 12 years.

“We doubled salaries and pensions, built 11,000 kilometers of roads and more than 1,000 schools and kindergartens,” he said, adding that DP remains committed to low tax policy.

Berisha concluded that the main opposition party represented the interests of Albania and its citizens, a mission that has become the political force’s lifeblood.
