Ruling Socialist Party official warns opposition on electoral, territorial reforms

TIRANA, Jan 19 /ATA/ – Chairman of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, on Monday urged opposition Democratic Party (DP) lawmakers to take part in parliamentary commissions on electoral and territorial reform, warning that the ruling majority would move ahead without them if they continue to boycott parliament.

“If you do not join the work on electoral and territorial reform by next week, we will make the changes without you,” Balla said. “Parliament cannot be held hostage by a boycott.”

Balla said the ruling party remained open to cooperation but would not allow key reforms to be delayed.

He also referred to an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to Prime Minister Edi Rama to participate in a new international body, Board of Peace, calling it an important and unusual role for Albania.

Balla added that upcoming local elections are expected between April 15 and May 15, 2027, and general elections between April 15 and May 15, 2029, underlining the need to complete electoral and territorial reforms on time.
