TIRANA, Sept 4 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama said that no local government directors have been dismissed; instead, he has requested their resignations in order to open a competitive process for their replacement.
In a televised interview, Prime Minister Edi Rama was asked whether he is assuming greater control over local government. He responded by noting that the mayors are members of the Socialist Party (SP), and emphasized that it is his responsibility to call them out for failing to fulfil the duties for which they were elected by the citizens.
Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized that when a mayor overlooks or fails to address a problem, it falls on the Socialist Party—which placed its trust in that mayor and listens to the concerns of the citizens—to step in and take action.
“As someone deeply grateful to Vlora for its strong support, and to Durrës as well, I will continue to serve as the Member of Parliament for both cities for as long as I remain in politics,” Rama affirmed.
“It’s not my job to fire them—that’s up to them. But I have an obligation to go and say: listen to what the people are saying, look at the results,” Rama emphasized.
He added that when performance falls short, officials should be asked to resign and understand that “enough is enough.” This approach, already applied in cities like Vlorë, aims to open up competition and allow capable individuals to step forward and contribute.
