Electoral Offenses: Celibashi reports 139 criminal cases

TIRANA, July 16 /ATA/ The Central Election Commission, the General Prosecutor’s Office, and SPAK have spent weeks reviewing all reports related to electoral crimes.

During an interview with Klan News, State Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi praised the collaboration between his institution and the two other judicial bodies.

“A successful experience, although I’ve noted that some political actors have not acknowledged this cooperation to the extent I believe it merits,” he stated.

Chief Commissioner Celibashi also disclosed the number of ongoing criminal investigations and highlighted the most frequently identified types of electoral offenses.

“There are around 139 criminal proceedings that have been handled or are currently being processed by SPAK. The reports mainly relate to pressure on public administration, misuse of public assets, and vote buying,” he emphasized.

Celibashi suggested that the cooperation between the three institutions should be formalized in law.

“This experience should be extended to future elections, and perhaps there is a need for this form of cooperation to be formalized in law and become more institutionalized,” he added.

According to the head of the CEC, the rules of the electoral race should also change when it comes to the public administration.

“Clear conduct limits must be defined for public administration officials, starting from the top levels—the prime minister, ministers, and beyond,” Celibashi emphasized.

As for tangible results, Chief Commissioner Celibashi noted that law enforcement agencies will need time to complete their investigations.
