TIRANA, March 25 /ATA/ The Democratic Party chairman, Sali Berisha, in a media briefing from the DP HQ, addressed the healthcare system in the country and the DP’s program.
According to Berisha, “Albania, in terms of the healthcare service it provides to its citizens, ranks among the third-world countries.”
Berisha went on saying that “the country is struggling with a supply of low-quality and ineffective medications, often outdated blaming this on laws passed to serve mafia interests, putting the health of citizens at risk.”
Berisha mentioned that the Democratic Party has an emergency healthcare program, highlighting that the immediate goal is to double the healthcare budget, as the current budget is “entirely inadequate.”
According to Berisha, the Democratic Party views the healthcare program for the Albanian people as an emergency. In this regard, their first action, in the initial budget, will be to double the healthcare budget. The DP’s program will also ensure that only medications of the same quality as those used in EU member states are available, by enacting laws to prohibit the import of any medicine not used in at least two EU countries.
The Democratic Party leader also emphasized that a second Medical Faculty will be opened.
“DP observes that currently, the number of hospital beds per capita is half of what it is in EU countries, and the number of doctors per capita is four times lower. In light of this, DP will increase the number of doctors, establish a second medical faculty to rapidly meet the European standard for doctors per capita, and focus on the reconstruction or construction of new hospitals,” said Berisha.
Berisha added that the salaries of doctors and nurses in Albania will be doubled as a fundamental condition to ensure that doctors stay in the country.
