TIRANA, Oct. 14 /ATA/ – The U.S. Embassy in Tirana has issued a security alert over violent protests in the Albanian capital, warning American citizens that unrest could expand near government buildings.
In its notice, the embassy said a protest on Durrës Street, near Skanderbeg Square, had turned violent after stones were thrown.
The protest may expand to nearby blocks and government buildings, potentially causing enhanced police presence, traffic disruptions, detours, and road closures, the Embassy warned.
“Embassy Tirana personnel have been advised to avoid demonstrations,” the Embassy added in its statement.
The Embassy urged American citizens to exercise caution, prioritise their personal safety and monitor local media and guidance from local authorities for the latest information.
Its recommendations include avoiding demonstrations, remaining aware of their surroundings, limiting distractions while moving through public areas, and maintaining an emergency plan or an exit strategy.
The diplomatic mission also advised U.S. citizens to keep low profile amid the unrest.
