EU Ambassador: Public administration plays key role in EU integration process, merit-based career systems needed

TIRANA, May 29 /ATA/ – Public administration has a key role in Albania’s accession to the European family, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Silvio Gonzato said in his remarks at an event in Tirana on Wednesday.

Addressing the event “Motivation Plan for the Public Administration as part of Albania’s EU Membership Challenge by 2030 and quality improvement of the state capacities to serve citizens,  Gonzato noted that 70% of the EU legislation should be enforced at a local level.

“I think that you have a crucial role to play in the country’s EU membership process. You are Albania’s true asset for the EU accession negotiations,” Gonzato told participants.

“Public administration is crucial. It is a machine through which the country advances its priorities. I am pleased that the government recognizes importance of the public administration. A corruption-free, transparent and accountable public administration should be built to deliver quality services to the citizens and businesses. For Albania to play its role as a EU member in full, merit-based career systems need to be built,” he added.

The EU Ambassador underlined that public administration reform is crucial to the EU accession efforts.

“The public administration reform will be one of the determining integration factors. Albania has adopted a realistic and ambitious roadmap that defines the most important steps for the civil service to deliver. The EU is not idly waiting for the reforms to complete but it is instead assisting the implementation efforts,” Gonzato said.
