TIRANA, Feb 14 /ATA/ – The Head of the Civil Emergencies Agency Haki Çako announced Sunday that all national roads are open to traffic despite the difficulties due to the snow and ice that cause slippery roads.
“Albania woke to a blanket of snow that has swept almost every region of the country. The severe weather was forecast by the meteorological services, as well as the information from the National Agency on Civil Protection and the Ministry of Defence that heavy rain and snow would sweep the country,” Çako told reporters.
“Snow has caused problems along national and rural roads. The two main problematic roads were that linking Librazhd and Milot that were blocked almost all night. Civil emergency crews, the Albanian Road Authority and the State Police acted to unblock these roads and open them to traffic,” Çako said.
He urged motorists to drive safely and avoid car passing attempts in order to prevent accidents due to the presence of ice on roads.
“Air temperatures will drop to extreme lows. Drivers who fail to use winter tires and chains could face problems. Snowfall is forecast to continue in mountainous areas and presence of ice is present along all roads across the country due to snowstorms and freezing temperatures,” Çako noted.
