TIRANA, March 24 /ATA/ – “Albania is on the right track and tangible progress has been made,” the government of the Netherlands said in a formal statement following the decision by General Affairs Council of the EU to open the accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia on Tuesday.
“We have agreed to open negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia and Albania. Before the first Intergovernmental Conference takes place, Albania will have to make further progress in delivering reforms in order to meet the conditions as agreed in the Council’s conclusions,” the government of the Netherlands said in a statement announced by the Dutch Embassy in Tirana.
“Albania is on the right track, significant progress has been made as the Commission’s Report shows. In the meantime, there are still some issues that call for attention. That is why the Netherlands wanted to consider certain conditions to be included in the Council’s conclusions,” the statement read.
“The Council has unanimously decided that the first intergovernmental Conference should take place immediately once Albania fulfils these conditions. Following a written procedure, the Council’s conclusions will be formally adopted by the Council,” Dutch government said in its statement.
