TIRANA, March 18 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ – Albania is on par with the countries in the region in terms of the number of tests for COVID-19, Prime Minister Edi Rama said Wednesday, stating that in no country everybody is being swabbed for the virus.
“Albania stands at the region’s average as to the number of tests conducted for COVID-19, because in no country all people are tested, but the individuals who show symptoms or have direct contact with the identified people who have contracted the virus,” PM Rama said.
Speaking about the tests for the virus, the government head noted “this issue has turned into a worldwide debate and actually the overwhelming majority of countries, but a minor number of them, stand on the side where we are.”
Rama noted that around 80% of people will never know they actually had contracted the virus.
“We don’t need to undergo tests, because we should all behave as if we have contracted the virus and protect ourselves and others and not become virus transmitters by violating the rules. Even if such tests were to be performed for the individuals who show just mild symptoms, whole world advises it should be tackled like a normal influenza, because a cure has yet to be found. Not only that, a number of certain medicines we are used to should be actually avoided,” Rama said.
“Switzerland is one of the world’s wealthiest countries and has one of the planet’s most excellent health systems, yet the country performs COVID-19 tests only for the people over 65, who are the most vulnerable ones, as well as people with a number of underlying conditions. While the rest are advised to stay at home as much as they can, observe the rules, maintain safe distance from others and possibly stay in a separate room,” Rama said.
The government head noted that Croatia, a country with bigger population than Albania, has performed a lower number of tests for the coronavirus.
