TIRANA, February 21 /ATA/- President of the Republic Ilir Meta warned at a press conference today that he would legally denounce Minister of Justice Etilda Gjonaj.
Meta argued that the minister has abused her office and pointed to publication in the official gazette of a decision taken by an independent body such as the Justice Appointments Council.
Meta said that the case would be reported to SPAK. According to him, Gjonaj has been directly involved along with some high-ranking officials of the ministry in this case. And this is part of the mafia scenario of capture of the Constitutional Court and stripping the President of the Republic of its powers.
Meta mentioned even the Secretary General of the Ministry who at order of the minister send the decision for publication at the official gazette.
According to the Constitution and the relevant laws, the decisions of the Justice Appointments Council are not published neither in the Official Journal nor anywhere else, but are only published on the website of the Supreme Court in the section specifically dedicated to the Council. ”
Meta added that the minister has no right to interfere even into the process of appointing or electing constitutional judges.
Meta said that since Minister Gjonaj has completely lost the confidence of the President of the Republic expressed by decree on her appointment, “I would welcome her resignation on Monday and invite her to face justice simply as a former minister, avoiding thus the obligation, but also the precedent for the Head of State to sue a minister exercising this duty.”/gj.mima/p.s./
