Juncker: Albania has made substantial progress, EU should keep promise and open accession negotiations

TIRANA, October 9 /ATA/ – European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker highlighted on Wednesday during a debate in the European Parliament on preparation of the European Council meeting of 17 and 18 October 2019, that Albania and North Macedonia have made substantial progress.

“This is the reason why the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, President Tusk, President-elect of the European Commission, Von der Leyen and I, addressed a letter to the member states of the European Union urging them to do what they promised to the Western Balkan countries, especially to Albania and North Macedonia. If Europe shows a clear will, then there will always be a clear path to achieving the objectives we have undertaken,” Juncker said.

“I will take the example of Prespa Agreement between North Macedonia and Greece. The European framework and perspective have helped to ensure that a decades-long conflict is finally resolved. The courageous reforms that Albania has undertaken should encourage us to see the prospect of the opening accession negotiations with Albania as favourable”, European Commission President said.
