Rama: Teachers who encourage pupils to attend rallies face suspension or dismissal

TIRANA, Oct 25 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that the Code of Ethics for pre-university teachers provides for their suspension or dismissal if they encourage pupils under the age of 18 to take part in rallies.

Rama stressed that schools must remain a safe space for children.

According to Rama, the Code of Ethics stipulates that no teacher may use their authority to encourage children under the age of 18 to attend gatherings of any kind against their own interests and their parents’ wishes.

“Teachers will face suspension or dismissal if they misuse their public or professional authority to encourage, organise or coordinate the participation of under-18s in rallies in breach of the child’s best interests,” Rama said.

He added that the measure would not affect teachers’ right to freedom of expression or their right to protest in a personal capacity.

“It only prohibits exploiting the teacher–pupil relationship to draw children into causes driven by adults,” the Prime Minister said.
