Rama in “dialogue” with student protester: Claims of police violence against students are malicious

TIRANA, Oct 21 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama is travelling to Budva, Montenegro, to take part in the Berlin Process Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for 21–22 October 2026.

The summit will bring together Western Balkan leaders and European partners to discuss strengthening regional cooperation, deepening economic integration and advancing the region’s EU integration prospects.

While travelling, the prime minister engaged in a virtual “dialogue” with a student protester, renewing his call for talks with “anyone who believes I am bad, while recognising that violence is an enemy of everyone’s freedom”.

Asked about police conduct during the protest and the use of tear gas, Rama said officers had been attacked with stones, fire, pellets and screws fired from primitive slingshots. He added that police had responded with tear gas and water, and in some cases used batons and rubber bullets, describing these as “tools used by police in every democratic country”.

“When the number of injured police officers is more than double that of injured protesters, unlike in other countries where similar incidents have occurred in recent days, any claim that the police have used violence against students is malicious,” he said.

Rama also stressed that he was ready to review the record of promises made in 2018.

“Face to face and with facts, not rhetoric,” he said.

Asked why he had chosen to speak to the “flamingos” now, the prime minister said: “I have already carried out and published an entire reflection after following, listening to and analysing them. I am referring to those from June, because, to me, they were the flamingos. Among the outcomes of that reflection is a platform launched today as part of the process: flamingomirror.al, the Flamingo Mirror.”
