Technical problems with Italian air traffic control disrupt flights to and from Tirana

TIRANA, Oct. 16 /ATA/ – Several flights to and from Tirana International Airport (TIA) were cancelled on Friday due to technical problems with Italy’s air traffic control systems, disrupting services between the Albanian capital and several Italian cities.

According to TIA, cancellations affected flights to and from Milan Malpensa, Turin, Verona, Pisa, Rimini and Genoa following restrictions imposed on Italian airspace.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy said the reduced air traffic capacity in Italy was expected to cause further delays and cancellations involving flights to and from Tirana.

Eight departures from Tirana to Italian airports had been cancelled so far, the ministry said, warning that additional disruptions could affect both outbound and inbound services until Italian airspace and airports returned to full capacity.

Albanian airspace and Tirana International Airport, however, continued to operate at full capacity, the ministry added.

TIA said it was coordinating with airlines and the relevant authorities to monitor developments and minimise the impact on passengers.

Travellers with flights to or from Italy were advised to check airline announcements regularly for the latest information on flight status.
