TIRANA, September 8/ATA/ Parliament opened the third session of its 11th legislature today.
The session began with the playing of the National Anthem, while Speaker of the Parliament Niko Peleshi delivered the opening remarks of the new Parliamentary session.
In his speech, Peleshi emphasized the responsibility of the Parliament to continue working in function of the citizens and the interest of the country, underlining the need for more accountability, responsibility and concrete results.
For the new session, Peleshi defined three fundamental directions for the work of the Parliament in function of European integration.
First, he listed the approximation of legislation, emphasizing that the Parliament will review with priority the draft laws related to EU standards and the fulfillment of the obligations stemming from the negotiations.
Peleshi said that post-legislative control will also be strengthened, since, according to him, the duty of the Assembly does not end with the adoption of a law, but continues during its implementation and assessment of its effects.
The second direction is related to the intensification of Parliamentary diplomacy. Peleshi said that contacts with the parliaments of the 27 member states will continue, while on September 28, the Assembly will organize in Tirana the Inter-Parliamentary Conference “Strategic Agenda for EU Enlargement and Albania’s Membership”.
According to him, the conference will gather representatives of the parliaments of member states, candidate countries and European institutions.
The third direction is the preparation for Albania’s full membership in the EU.
“We will not wait for the day of membership to begin preparations for membership. We will start today”, said Peleshi.
Speaker of the Assembly also focused on the Electoral Reform and the Administrative-Territorial Reform, which he described as important issues of the new session.
Peleshi said that the use of technology and Artificial Intelligence will be expanded to increase the efficiency, productivity and transparency of Parliamentary activity.
In closing his remarks, Peleshi said that the Assembly will be evaluated not by what it promises, but by what it achieves.
“Albania has chosen Europe. Now, we must continue to do the work that takes us there,” he said. /gj.m/r.e/p.s./
