Brazilian magazine Estado de Minas features Albania’s subterranean thermal wonder, Lake Neuron

TIRANA, Aug 27 /ATA/ – The Brazilian magazine Estado de Minas has recently highlighted Lake Neuron, an underground thermal lake in Albania’s Vjosa Valley, describing it as one of the country’s most remarkable natural wonders.

The lake, containing an estimated 8.3 million litres of thermal water, lies near the southern town of Permet and the Benja thermal springs.

“Discover the hidden treasure beneath Albania’s mountains, one of the giant lakes with thermal waters,” the magazine said in a feature on Lake Neuron, which was discovered last year by a team of Czech scientists.

Researchers have described Neuron as the largest known underground thermal lake in the world, according to the article.

The cavern is notable not only for its volume of water but also for its dimensions revealed during mapping.

During a 2024 expedition, researchers used LiDAR technology to map the cave, establishing that the lake is 138 metres long and 42 metres wide and contains about 8.3 million litres of thermal water.

Lake Neuron is located near Permet, a small town in southern Albania surrounded by mountains and the Vjosa River valley, an area known for its natural landscapes and thermal springs.
