Marubi dynasty preserves Albania’s photographic heritage

TIRANA, Aug 21 /ATA/ – The National Museum of Photography “Marubi” in northern city of Shkodra offers visitors a journey through the country’s photographic history, spanning three generations of the Marubi dynasty and an archive containing hundreds of thousands of images documenting Albania’s past.

Visitors can trace the evolution of photography from the 19th-century studio through advances in photographic techniques to an extensive archive documenting the country over decades.

The museum’s three thematic spaces focus on the work and legacy of Pietro Marubi, Kel Marubi and Gegë Marubi.

Pietro Marubi is presented through the photographic studio, where every detail was carefully arranged and photography was conceived as a carefully composed scene.

Kel Marubi is represented through the darkroom, highlighting the photographic process and technological advances that ushered in a new era.

Gegë Marubi’s legacy is showcased through the photo archive, which preserves the heritage of three generations and an extraordinary collection documenting Albania’s people, daily life and history.

The Marubi Museum is more than a photography exhibition. Through its objects, spaces, lighting and stories passed down through generations, it shows how photography became a valuable record of Albania’s collective memory.
