Defence Minister: Firefighters battle aggressive wildfires across Albania

TIRANA, Aug 21 /ATA/ – Defence Minister Ermal Nufi said on Friday that firefighters and army personnel are battling aggressive wildfires in several parts of Albania, with most residents of the village of Tena in north-eastern region of Mirdita evacuated as a precaution.

Nufi, who visited Tena, said the situation had improved over the previous two hours following the intervention of firefighters and two Air Force helicopters. Difficult terrain had hampered ground operations, while aerial firefighting had helped reduce the threat.

“The situation was very difficult two hours ago, with a highly aggressive fire breaking out. We immediately brought in municipal and local firefighting forces and requested air support,” Nufi told reporters. “As you can see, the situation appears to be under control, although it remains difficult.”

Defence Minister said two or three fires were being reported daily in Mirdita, raising concerns about possible deliberate arson. He said determining the causes and identifying those responsible was a matter for the police.

“We are doing everything possible to ensure there is no loss of life or damage to homes,” he said.

The most challenging situation remained in Dukat, Vlore, where strong winds were rapidly spreading the flames. Some 105 Armed Forces personnel were deployed there, supported by two Air Tractor aircraft.

Active fires were also reported in Gojan, Puka, where a blaze had reignited in Gojan i Madh. More than 60 Armed Forces personnel were stationed in the area.

“The most problematic situation is in Vlore, in Dukat. The fire is spreading rapidly and the wind has made things more difficult,” Nufi said, adding that he would travel to Gojan after visiting Mirdita.

He said difficult conditions were also being reported on Mount Dajti near Tirana and in Klos, north-eastern Albania.
