TIRANA, July 11 /ATA/ – More than 2.5 million passenger crossings were recorded at Albania’s border crossing points with Kosovo in May and June, driven by a surge in travel as thousands of visitors headed to the country’s coastal and other tourist destinations, border police said on Saturday.
Arben Alika, head of the Kukës Border and Migration Directorate, said authorities processed 2,569,414 passenger crossings and 1,303,496 vehicle crossings during the two-month period, averaging 42,122 passengers and 21,369 vehicles a day.
The busiest 24-hour period saw 74,247 passengers and 28,959 vehicles pass through the border crossings, underscoring the sharp increase in traffic during the summer tourism season, he told a news conference.
To cope with the higher volumes, authorities have expanded capacity at the Morinë border crossing by adding two new inspection posts. Installation of new technology and equipment is also nearing completion, a move expected to speed up the processing of travellers and vehicles while maintaining border security standards.
Alika said police had also stepped up safety monitoring on the region’s lakes and rivers, with 57 officers deployed and surveillance carried out from the ground and by drones to ensure compliance with navigation and safety regulations.
