Berisha: Government funding for Kanye West concert is unconstitutional

TIRANA, July 11 /ATA/ – Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha said on Saturday that the main opposition party would file a criminal complaint over what he described as alleged government abuses, including the use of the government’s reserve fund to help finance U.S. rapper Kanye West’s concert in Tirana.

Speaking during an online discussion with supporters, Berisha said the party would soon submit to prosecutors a complaint based on what he called “Edi Rama’s Red Book,” which he said contained allegations of hundreds of criminal offences by the government.

Berisha also claimed that the anti-government protests, which he described as a “peaceful youth and civic uprising,” had gained broad support across Europe.

The Democratic Party leader accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of violating the constitution by allocating money from the government’s reserve fund, which he said was intended exclusively for emergencies and exceptional circumstances.

“The government’s reserve fund exists to respond to emergencies and urgent situations. Under no circumstances should it be used to finance a private concert,” Berisha said, alleging that the funds were allocated to support Kanye West’s performance for the Prime Minister’s own interests.

The government has defended its reported 4 million euro contribution to the concert, saying it was an investment that would generate economic benefits through tourism and increased consumer spending.
