TIRANA, June 24 /ATA/ “In a press conference from the blue headquarters, DP leader Sali Berisha endorsed the protesters’ demands, calling for the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and a constitutional limit of two terms for prime ministers. Berisha emphasized that the Democratic Party is fully prepared to vote on the mandate limitation in the Parliament.
International watchdogs now agree that Edi Rama stifles the rotation of power. To safeguard Albania’s democracy, we must apply constitutional wisdom to amend the laws, ensuring no leader can indefinitely hold onto the government, said Berisha.
Asked if the DP would support a transitional government chosen by lot, Berisha clarified that the party cannot—and will not—operate outside constitutional bounds.
“The proposal appears to call for an expert government. For such a cabinet to take office constitutionally, it requires a cross-party agreement in parliament followed by a full vote of confidence. I am familiar with this process, as it is the only constitutional mechanism I know for installing a new government,” Berisha said.
Also, Berisha stated that along with supporting the protests, the DP will advance its renewal through other forums.
