TIRANA, June 18 /ATA/ Chairperson of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group Taulant Balla stated today in the Assembly that the greatest achievement of the recent protests is their strict adherence to nonviolence.
In response to the opposition, Balla stated that the protesters took the square back from the Democratic Party leader, calling him the biggest loser of the rallies.
“The ultimate success of these demonstrations lies in their peaceful execution, devoid of Molotov cocktails, fireworks or violence. Above all, the citizens have taken the square back. Ultimately, Sali, you are the biggest loser of this movement,” said Balla.
The socialist MP also criticized the opposition’s efforts to connect with the protests, claiming that there is no precedent in European countries for MPs from traditional parties to participate in protests organized by other political forces.
Balla also said that during the debate over the European Parliament’s Albania report, the focus shifted to Amendment 17, with accusations that the Democratic Party had misled the public.
According to him, while the European People’s Party and its affiliate, the DP, rejected Green MEP Thomas Waitz’s amendment, the European Socialists and the Socialist Party of Albania supported it.
” Regarding Amendment 17 proposed by Thomas Waitz and the Greens, as a matter of fact it was your political group—along with the Conservatives and the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) who voted against it. I urge you to be serious about this; your EPP alignment actively contributed to defeating this measure”, said Balla.
Regarding amendment 17, proposed by Thomas Waitz and other Green MEPs, listen to understand: you voted against amendment 17 in the European Parliament. You. Because the European People’s Party, to which you belong, voted against. You voted against. And, likewise, the Conservative Party, as well as the ally of another here. So I beg you very much, please, you must be serious: the Socialist Party, the Socialists and the Democrats voted against.
While we championed this amendment in the European Parliament to support Albanian citizens, you actively opposed it”, concluded Balla.
