Protest over Zvërnec project enters eleventh straight day

TIRANA, June 11 /ATA/ Protesters gathered for the eleventh day running to oppose a planned investment project in Zvërnec, with organisers describing the demonstration as a nationwide protest and linking it to the anniversary of theLeague of Prizren on 10 June.

The demonstrators first assembled in Skanderbeg Square, where they reiterated calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, the departure of opposition leader Sali Berisha from his post, investigations into politicians’ assets, and an end to what they described as the sale of national assets.

After gathering in Skanderbeg Square, protesters marched along Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard before regrouping outside the Prime Minister’s Office.

Demonstrators repeated calls for the resignation of both Prime Minister Edi Rama and opposition leader Sali Berisha. Many also carried banners highlighting environmental protection and other issues that organisers say have united participants in the protest movement

Chants including “Albania for Albanians, death to traitors,” “A new Albania,” “More tomorrow,” and “Without youth there is no Albania” were heard in unison as protesters marched along the boulevard.

Following the gathering outside the Prime Minister’s Office, the national anthem was played. One of the protest activists read a brief account of the League of Prizren, arguing that the country is currently facing a situation similar to that of 148 years ago, when its territorial integrity was under threat.

“We will make Albania a country in which people can live with dignity,” she stated, adding that the new movement is standing up to what she described as “old politics.”

Journalist Klevi Muka read a message from writer and analyst Kim Mehmeti. Subsequently, several other protesters addressed the crowd from a platform set up specifically for the demonstration, while others recited poetry by Migjeni.
