TIRANA, June 10 /ATA/ – President Bajram Begaj on Wednesday marked the 148th anniversary of the Prizren League, describing it as a lasting symbol of national unity and responsibility.
The head of state said the Prizren League represents the highest expression of Albanian national consciousness and stands as a testament to the efforts of Albanian National Awakening figures to secure the unity and independence of Albanians under a single state.
“The spirit of the Prizren League remains a constant call for unity, national responsibility and dedication to Albania and Albanians wherever they live. Their example, courage and wisdom continue to inspire our nation and will always be honoured,” Begaj said in a social media post.
Founded on June 10, 1878 in the Kosovo town of Prizren, the League is widely regarded as the most important event in 19th-century Albanian history, marking the beginning of organised national political action to defend Albanian-populated territories and preserve Albanian national identity.
The Prizren League was established amid concerns that Albanian-inhabited lands could be divided among neighbouring states following the Treaty of San Stefano and deliberations at the Congress of Berlin, two diplomatic milestones that reshaped the Balkans in the aftermath of the Russo-Turkish War.
