TIRANA, May 18 /ATA/ – The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ferit Hoxha, said on Monday that ensuring a safer environment for journalists and media professionals was essential for strengthening democratic institutions and public trust.
Speaking at the 11th OSCE South East Europe Media Conference in Tirana, titled “Strengthening Journalism as a Public Good”, Hoxha said Albania remained committed to advancing media freedom, protecting journalists’ safety and aligning with European standards as part of its European Union accession process.
“At a time when the media landscape has become increasingly complex and challenging everywhere, we will continue working to foster an environment where free, independent, professional and ethical journalism can thrive,” Hoxha said.
He added that media freedom must not only be protected but “continually strengthened and renewed”.
“In an era marked by disinformation, polarisation and rapidly evolving digital realities, safeguarding the integrity and independence of journalism is more important than ever,” he said.
“A safer environment for journalists and media professionals is essential not only for stronger democratic institutions and greater public trust, but also for more resilient, informed and healthier societies.”
Hoxha also praised cooperation with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and other international partners in supporting what he described as a safer, freer and more sustainable media environment across the region.
