TIRANA, May 18 /ATA/ – Opposition leader Sali Berisha said on Monday that the Democratic Party’s next protest would take place in early June, as the opposition presses ahead with its anti-government campaign.
Speaking to reporters after appearing at the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution Structure (SPAK) over the “Partizani” privatization case, Berisha said the opposition would continue its protests despite focusing first on internal party processes.
“We will continue protests in the strongest possible way,” Berisha said. “But from now until May 30 we have two major events: election of the party chairman and the National Assembly.”
He said the processes required extensive preparation and organisational work.
Berisha said the opposition would stage what he described as “the strongest peaceful uprising Albania has ever seen” in the first days of June.
Opposition leader renewed accusations against former SPAK head Altin Dumani of money laundering related to the purchase of a villa, without providing evidence.
He also accused Dumani of undermining political pluralism and alleged that investigations into vote-buying cases had been shelved.
Berisha further claimed Dumani had disrupted the investigation into Albania’s incinerator corruption affair by seeking the arrest of former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj, whom Berisha said had opposed the project multiple times.
