Çako: Integrated early warning system for climate risks in Albania

TIRANA, May 8  /ATA/ Within the framework of the regional forum “United for Climate: Regional Cooperation for a Resilient Future,” a session was held today on “Early Warning Systems – From Data to Action for Resilient Communities.” The discussion centered on strengthening preparedness and safeguarding communities, with a particular focus on those most vulnerable to climate-related hazards.

The panel brought together leaders and representatives from institutions responsible for civil protection, meteorological services, and research centers from Albania, the region, and Europe, who shared experiences and best practices for developing effective early warning systems.

In his remarks, the Director General of the National Civil Protection Agency, Haki Çako, emphasized the importance of establishing a functional and integrated early warning system for multiple hazards in Albania. He underlined that such a system must be based on accurate data, real-time information, and strong inter-institutional coordination, with the aim of enhancing the safety and protection of citizens.

According to participants, addressing the challenges posed by climate change requires closer regional cooperation, the adoption of innovative technologies, and the strengthening of institutional capacities to improve emergency response and enhance community resilience.

At the conclusion of the discussions, it was emphasized that the development of modern early warning systems remains a strategic priority for the countries in the region, aimed at minimizing risks and protecting lives, property, and the environment.
