Legal Affairs Committee approves 20% fuel excise cut to tackle rising oil prices

TIRANA, May 4/ATA/ The Legal Affairs Committee approved a normative act for a 20% excise duty reduction on fuel to counter high retail prices caused by rising international market rates.

Amid rising international oil prices driven by Middle East tensions, Deputy Minister of Finance Andi Mehmeti announced government measures to shield consumers from fuel hikes.

According to Mehmeti, the intervention aims to stabilize the market and keep the retail prices of gasoline and diesel under control, through a combination of setting ceiling prices and reducing taxes.

Mehmeti emphasized that a 20% reduction in excise duty will be automatically triggered if gasoline exceeds 200 Lekë/liter and diesel exceeds 220 Lekë/liter.

The proposed changes will lower the gasoline excise tax from 39.7 to approximately 31.5 lekë per liter, marking a reduction of roughly 7.3 lekë per liter. /m.q/j.p/p.s./
